Bulgaria is one of Europe’s oldest winemaking countries, yet it remains one of its best-kept secrets. In recent years, Bulgarian wineries have been crafting some of the most exciting wines on the market. Attracting both connoisseurs and casual wine lovers with their rich wine aromas and unforgettable wine flavours.

As a passionate wine journalist, I’ve had the pleasure of following the developments in Bulgaria’s wine scene closely. Today, I’m taking you through some of the latest news from four standout Bulgarian wineries: Edoardo Miroglio, Katarzyna Estate, Bratya Minkovi and Burgozone.

Edoardo Miroglio – Pioneering Organic Sparkling Wines

Edoardo Miroglio, located in Elenovo, has long impressed wine lovers with its sparkling wines, crafted using the traditional method. The latest news is that the winery has expanded its organic wine range, introducing a new Brut Nature Rosé made from Pinot Noir.

This elegant sparkling wine is already gaining attention internationally for its fresh wine aromas of wild strawberries and brioche, coupled with a fine, persistent mousse. It’s a clear sign that Bulgarian sparkling wines are ready to compete on the world stage.

Katarzyna Estate – Award-Winning Reds and New Releases

Nestled near the Greek border, Katarzyna Estate continues to shine. Their new Katarzyna Reserve 2022, a bold blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, has just received a gold medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2025.

This vintage is a celebration of complex wine flavours: ripe blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, and subtle oak. The estate is also preparing to launch a limited-edition Syrah later this year, promising yet another aromatic gem for collectors and wine lovers.

Bratya Minkovi – Innovation Meets Tradition

Bratya Minkovi, or Minkov Brothers, have built a reputation for harmonising tradition with innovation. The winery recently introduced a new series called Winemaker’s Collection, focusing on single-varietal expressions.

Their 2023 Chardonnay, aged on lees, delivers an exquisite bouquet of citrus, green apple, and vanilla. Meanwhile, the winery’s latest Merlot is impressing tasters with its lush texture and layered wine aromas of plum, spice, and cocoa.

In addition, the estate is pioneering sustainable viticulture practices, with over 60% of their vineyards now certified as eco-friendly.

Burgozone – A Rising Star on the Danube

Situated on the banks of the Danube River, Burgozone is one of Bulgaria’s most dynamic wineries. Their Burgozone Pinot Noir 2023 has recently been highlighted by Decanter magazine as a “must-try Bulgarian wine.”

The cool-climate influences give this wine its signature elegance, with bright cherry, raspberry, and subtle earthy wine flavours. Burgozone is also expanding its export markets, with recent success in Scandinavia and Japan.

This summer, they will launch a new line of orange wines (skin-contact white wines), bringing an exciting new dimension to their portfolio.

Conclusion

The Bulgarian wine industry is undergoing a renaissance, driven by dedicated producers like Edoardo Miroglio, Katarzyna Estate, Bratya Minkovi, and Burgozone. Whether you seek the elegance of sparkling wines. Тhe richness of bold reds, or the innovation of skin-contact styles, Bulgaria offers a treasure trove of wine aromas and wine flavours waiting to be discovered.

As a wine lover, there has never been a better time to explore what this ancient yet forward-looking wine country has to offer.
